typography in music videos!
September 14, 2007 · Leave a Comment
As egotistic as Kanye West is, he tends to work with some great and talented people. He has a great eye, and does tend to stand out above his peers in regards to his creative choices…and while typography in music videos is nothing new, its great to see Kanye embrace it, and create yet another non-generic rap video.
check out the above video, “The Good Life,” by Kanye West… the video feels like a throwback to oldschool hiphop videos by the likes of J.J. Fad, Run DMC, etc…lots of good fun to be had.

michel gondry…king of the dance!

like mark romanek, michel gondry is without a doubt one of the best music video directors of all time. he’s done videos for Bjork, The White Stripes, The Foo Fighters, Daft Punk, The Rolling Stones, Massive Attack, Radiohead, and many others, most recently, Kanye West’s controversial (where he got on stage at the MTV euro awards for his video not winning best clip) 1million dollar video for Touch The Sky.
his videos to many may look very strange, and hard to understand, such as “Around the World” by Daft Punk, or “Star Guitar” by The Chemical Brothers. they’re not merely repetition or plain images, he simply has a means of intertwining the idea of sound with its literal representation in video form. each character in Around the World represents a beat or a noise, just as each tree, or train, or bridge represents the very same in Star Guitar.
The above posted video is called Lucas with the Lid Off by Lucas, released in 1994! that’s over 10 years ago, and yet the video is more complex and modern than most out there today. the video is filmed in ONE SHOT, using 18 sets that Lucas had to run to in order to be ready by the time the camera arrived. there is seriously no tricks in the shot, everything you see is really happening, all within the span of 4minutes. though the video took 17 shots to get perfect. beautiful.

this blog is meant to be about design. as such, I should by no means fear away from the idea of the design of sex toys. the above is the tail end of a vibrator, designed by Michael Young, very appropriately titled the “Sabar.” it’s interesting when things such as sex objects suddenly are given a dash of glamour, and a sense of becoming modern and dare I say it, “fashionable?”

see the amazingly wonderful, beautiful, and clearly overpriced iPod Touch.
the thing only holds 8gb or 16gb, but yet still costs more than the 160gb iPod. that’s ridiculous. I realize you can browse the web on this thing, free of charge (just use your wireless network)…but goddamn. I have far too much music to only have 16gb available….but…I will most likely end up buying this eventually, it’s too pretty not to.
just you watch. the day i buy it, an 80gb version will come out.
